HOW THE LESSONS WORK

Step-by-Step Skill Building

Students practice on digital pianos with headphones when working individually on their pieces and receiving personalised feedback, and without headphones during group activities, allowing each student to learn music that matches their specific level and interests.

Within every session, complex skills are broken down into manageable challenges, making difficult concepts accessible and achievable, moving directly from theory to practice through alternating focused teaching sessions and independent practice time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Most Common Questions

How does Piano Lab lead to faster progress?

The micro-cycle approach allows for the immediate application of new skills, deeper understanding, and development of effective practice habits, leading to accelerated progress.

Won't my child need constant supervision to stay on task?

Piano Lab is designed to build self-motivation and focus. Students learn to direct their own practice, reducing the need for external supervision.

How do you ensure all students in the group receive adequate attention?

The structure of Piano Lab allows the teacher to observe and guide each student during their individual practice time within the session.

What if my child is shy or uncomfortable in group settings?

Piano Lab's supportive environment often helps shy students build confidence. The focus on individual practice within the group setting eases social pressure.

  • How does Piano Lab prepare students for home practice?

By experiencing effective practice techniques during the session, students learn to replicate these methods at home, leading to more productive independent practice.

Is Piano Lab suitable for advanced students?

Yes, the self-directed learning approach of Piano Lab benefits students at all levels, including advanced players.

How do you handle different learning paces within the group?

The micro-cycle structure allows each student to progress at their own pace while still benefiting from group dynamics.

Are there still opportunities for one-on-one instruction?

Yes, the teacher provides individual guidance during the practice portions of each micro-cycle.

How can parents support their child's learning from Piano Lab?

We provide guidance on creating a supportive practice environment at home that encourages independence and self-direction.

What instrument does my child need for Piano Lab?

Any basic keyboard is fine to start with, but for the best learning experience, we recommend an 88-key digital piano with weighted, touch-sensitive keys. This type of piano will maximise your child's enjoyment and accelerate their pace of learning. However, don't let not having the ideal instrument stop your child from starting Piano Lab - we can begin with what you have.

How can I get support if my child gets stuck practising at home?

We provide support between Piano Lab sessions. If your child encounters any difficulties or has questions while practising at home, you can text the teacher directly. You can also send video/audio recordings if specific feedback on your child's playing is needed. This ensures your child doesn't get stuck and can continue making progress until the next session.

How do you assess progress in Piano Lab?

Progress is assessed through a combination of in-session observations, student self-assessments, and periodic performance opportunities.

How do students practice different pieces or levels in the same group?

During Piano Lab sessions, students use headphones for individual practice time, allowing each to work on their specific pieces or exercises without distraction. When it's time for group instruction, demonstrations, or peer feedback, students simply unplug their headphones. This approach enables students of different levels to learn together, benefiting from group dynamics and peer support while still receiving personalised instruction tailored to their individual needs.

Does using headphones isolate students from each other?

Not at all. While headphones are used during individual practice time, there are plenty of opportunities for group interaction, peer learning, and collaborative activities. This balance allows students to focus when needed and engage with their peers at appropriate times, fostering both independent learning and social skills.

How does the teacher manage different levels of students simultaneously?

The use of headphones allows the teacher to work with each student individually during practice time, addressing their specific needs and level. During group activities, the teacher facilitates discussions and demonstrations that benefit all levels, encouraging peer learning and support regardless of individual skill levels.

How are Piano Lab fees paid for children?

Piano Lab fees for children are paid monthly in advance on the 1st of each month via automatic debit from the parent/carer's bank card through the My Music Staff portal.

Is there a registration fee for children's Piano Lab?

Yes, there is a one-time, non-refundable £42 registration fee per child. Families enrolling multiple children receive a £2 discount on the fee for each additional child.

What's included in the children's registration fee?

The registration fee guarantees your child's spot in Piano Lab and provides access to resources like the lending library, apps like Supersonics and Piano Express, as well as recitals and workshops.

Can I reschedule if my child misses a Piano Lab session?

If you provide at least 24 hours notice for a missed session, you'll receive a makeup credit redeemable for a future session, subject to availability. Credits cannot roll over to the next academic year.

How do I cancel or reschedule my child's Piano Lab?

Use the Student Portal calendar to cancel any upcoming session. With 24 hours notice, you'll get a makeup credit to book an available slot matching your lab's type, duration and age range.

How do I withdraw my child from Piano Lab?

To discontinue your child's enrollment in Piano Lab, please provide one month's notice via email. Your child can continue attending Piano Lab sessions until the notice period concludes. The final invoice will be adjusted based on the number of sessions your child was entitled to up until the termination date.
