FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Most Common Questions
I have limited time to practice. Can I still make progress?
Absolutely! We focus on teaching efficient practice techniques that yield results even in short sessions. Quality over quantity is our mantra.
I'm worried about keeping up with others in the group. How do you handle different skill levels?
Each student progresses at their own pace. The group setting is for support and motivation, not comparison. You'll be surprised how learning alongside others can accelerate your progress.
How do you help students balance piano practice with
busy work and family lives?
We provide strategies for integrating practice into your daily routine and making the most of short practice sessions. You'll learn how to progress even with a packed schedule.
What kind of instrument do I need to start Piano Lab lessons?
While any keyboard will suffice to begin with, we recommend an 88-key digital piano with weighted keys and touch sensitivity for the best learning experience. This type of instrument will significantly enhance your enjoyment and accelerate your learning pace. However, don't let not having the ideal instrument stop you from starting – we can work with what you have!
I'm very self-conscious about my playing. How does Piano Lab address this?
We create a judgment-free zone where mistakes are normalized as part of the learning process. The use of headphones during practice time also allows you to focus on your own playing without fear of others listening.
I've tried learning piano before and struggled. How is this different?
Piano Lab is designed to identify and address adult-specific learning challenges. We'll help you reshape old habits and develop new, effective learning strategies.
How do you make the group setting comfortable for introverts or those with social anxiety?
We ease into group activities gradually. Many initially apprehensive students find the small group setting less intimidating than expected and often become our biggest advocates!
Can Piano Lab help me overcome negative self-talk about my musical abilities?
Yes! We actively work on developing a growth mindset, helping you replace negative self-talk with constructive, encouraging inner dialogue.
I'm returning to piano after years away. Will I fit in?
Many of our students are in similar situations. You'll find a supportive community of adults rediscovering their love for music.
How do you address the frustration that can come with adult learning?
We normalise the challenges of adult learning and provide tools to manage frustration. You'll learn to view obstacles as opportunities for growth.
What's the most unexpected benefit adults experience in Piano Lab?
Many students are surprised by the camaraderie that develops. What starts as a shared interest in piano often blossoms into meaningful connections and mutual support.
What type of repertoire will I learn in Piano Lab?
We offer a curated selection of pieces designed to develop your skills, but we also encourage you to bring in music that inspires you. Whether it's a popular song you've always wanted to play or a classical piece you love, we'll work together to incorporate your personal musical interests into your learning journey.
What if I have a question or get stuck during my practice at home?
We offer continuous support between lessons. If you encounter any difficulties or have questions during your home practice, you can text me directly. You're also welcome to send video or audio recordings of your playing if you need specific feedback. This service ensures you won't get stuck or have to wait until the next lesson to resolve any issues, allowing for consistent progress.
Can I mix different styles of music in my learning?
Absolutely! We believe in creating a well-rounded musical education while catering to your personal interests. You'll have the opportunity to explore various genres and styles, from classical to contemporary, ensuring a diverse and engaging learning experience.

We break down complex pieces into manageable segments and provide specific practice strategies for each section. Our supportive environment encourages you to view challenges as opportunities for growth, and we celebrate every small victory along the way.
