HOW THE LESSONS WORK

One-To-One Instruction Plus Buddy Time

Each session begins with one-to-one instruction time between your child and the teacher. Then, a second student joins for "buddy time", where both children learn together through musical games and teamwork activities. They share musical moments at one piano and build independent practice skills on separate keyboards, developing collaborative and self-directed abilities. Afterwards, the first student departs while the second continues with their individual instruction.

This structure provides personalised teaching while incorporating the motivation, fun, and social benefits of learning alongside a peer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Most Common Questions

What if my child has a short attention span?

Don't worry! Our varied activities and gamified learning strategies are designed to keep children engaged throughout the lesson.

How are buddies paired up?

We match students based on age and skill level to ensure compatible learning experiences.

Can my child's friend be their buddy?

Absolutely! If you know someone who'd like to learn piano, let us know, and we can pair them together.

What happens if my child doesn't enjoy the buddy time?

We can easily switch to other lesson format if needed, without disrupting your child's learning journey.

  • What happens when my child turns 7?

We'll discuss transitioning options to ensure your child's continued musical growth and enjoyment, e.g. Piano Lab for children.

Are there additional costs beyond the lesson fee?

The £31 per lesson fee and £42 annual registration fee (£40 for each member of the same family) cover most program costs, including workshops and recitals. Exam fees and tuition books are not included.

    How often are lessons scheduled?

Lessons are weekly, with 38 sessions scheduled per academic year (September-July).

    Can we join mid-year?

Yes, enrollment is available throughout the year, subject to availability. Tuition will be prorated for mid-year starts.

How do you handle practice at home?

We provide resources to support at-home learning. Parents also receive regular progress updates and access to online platforms for additional support.

What kind of instrument do children need for Buddy Lessons?

While any keyboard can work initially, we recommend an 88-key digital piano with weighted, touch-sensitive keys for the best Buddy Lessons experience. This type of instrument enhances enjoyment and accelerates learning. However, don't let not having the ideal piano stop your child from starting - we can work with the instrument you have.

What if my child gets stuck practising at home between Buddy Lessons?

We offer continuous support outside of lessons. If your child has any difficulties or questions while practising at home, you can text the teacher directly. You're also welcome to send video/audio recordings if specific feedback is needed. This ensures your child doesn't get stuck and can keep making consistent progress.

    Are recitals mandatory?

Recitals are optional but highly encouraged as they provide valuable performance experience.

How are Buddy Lesson fees paid?

Buddy Lesson fees are paid monthly in advance on the 1st of each month. The fees will be automatically debited from the student's (or parent/carer's) bank card through the My Music Staff portal.

How is the monthly tuition calculated?

The monthly payment amount is calculated by evenly distributing the total yearly cost across the 11 months from September 2023 to July 2024. The monthly tuition fee remains the same regardless of how many lessons occur in a given month.

Is there a registration fee for Buddy Lessons?

Yes, there is a one-time, non-refundable registration fee of £42 per student. Families enrolling two or more members receive a £2 discount for each member.

What does the registration fee cover?

The registration fee guarantees your spot in the Buddy Lessons program and provides access to various resources, apps, and learning tools, such as the games and book lending library, Supersonics, Piano Express App, recitals, and workshops.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule a Buddy Lesson?

Lessons missed or cancelled cannot be carried over or refunded. However, if you provide at least 24 hours' notice, you will receive a makeup credit. Makeup lessons are subject to availability, and credits cannot be carried forward to the next academic year or refunded.

How do I cancel or reschedule a Buddy Lesson?
